The Fine Print
I did not tell him.
I want to be honest about that, because I have turned it over many times, and I have made my peace with it, but I will not pretend it was a simple thing.
I did not keep the pregnancy secret to punish him, or to hold a card in reserve, or out of any plan at all.
I kept it secret because of that sentence in the courthouse hallway — a waste of the best years I had to start a family — and because a man who could say that about the marriage could say worse about the child, and I would not hand my daughter, before she was even born, to a father who had already decided her mother was a broken machine.
So I signed, and I said nothing, and I built my life quietly around the small secret growing in me.
