I withheld it to protect a child who did not yet exist in the world from being received, at the very start of her life, as a bargaining chip in her parents’ war, or worse, as proof that the machine had worked after all and could therefore be blamed for having taken so long.

I would not let my daughter’s first meaning, in her father’s mind, be vindication or leverage. I wanted her to be a person before she was ever a card in anyone’s hand.

And so I chose to carry her in silence, and to let the truth arrive on my timing rather than his — not never, but not yet, and not in the fog of a divorce designed to rob me.

If that was a wrong, it was the smallest wrong available to me in a situation that offered no clean ones, and I chose it with my eyes open, and I would choose it again.
