The First Name on the Filing
After Wyatt and Emmett were born, I had to step back. Wyatt needed specialized physical therapy for nearly a year; Emmett had chronic respiratory trouble that meant constant appointments.
I told myself stepping back was a temporary sacrifice for the family. Over time, Barrett began calling himself the founder. Eventually he was telling magazine interviewers he’d built the whole operation out of nothing but his own determination.
At first I stayed quiet because I didn’t want to embarrass him. Later I stayed quiet because correcting the story would have exposed how far apart we’d already grown.
But when he told our sons I had never given anything of value to their lives, my silence ended.
Douglas approached, his posture guarded. “Mrs. O’Connell, are there other records we should know about before we return?”
