Chapter 26 — He Made Better Choices

The legal proceedings dragged on for months.

Santiago was charged with grand larceny, with fraud, with identity theft, with obstruction of justice, and the company he had robbed brought civil suits of its own.

Because the forensic experts could not prove for certain whether Sebastian had died from the crash itself or from what came after, no homicide charge could be brought, a gap in the proof that I have had to learn to live beside.

But the judge showed no leniency for the rest of it, and in the end Santiago was sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison.
