So I smiled, and I let the lie stand, and I filed it away, and I began, from that moment, to live a double life of my own, a smaller and more justified one than his, but a double life all the same.
I would spend the coming weeks being one woman on the surface, a tired newlywed with headaches, and another woman underneath, cold and awake and counting.
It is a strange thing to discover that you are capable of that, that you can look into the face of someone you thought you loved and calmly begin to build the case that will destroy him.
I did not enjoy discovering it.
