The Fishhook Scar
It was not the act of a man out for his brother’s blood.
There was a courage in that email that I did not fully appreciate until much later.
It would have been so much easier for Sebastian to look away, to tell himself the numbers were someone else’s problem, to protect the family peace by pretending he had seen nothing.
Instead he did the harder, lonelier thing.
It was the act of a man who loved his brother and would not lie for him, who was trying, in an impossible situation, to find the narrow path that was both merciful and honest.
I have turned that choice of Sebastian’s over many times, because it tells you everything about the difference between the two brothers.
