And then, to my absolute astonishment, my mortified mother-in-law, sitting on my guest room bed surrounded by what I believed to be evidence of serious crimes, let out a small, embarrassed laugh.
“Why,” I gasped, “are you laughing right now?” Her eyes welled up with tears, and she let out another breathless, helpless chuckle, one hand over her mouth, shaking her head at herself.
Theodore stepped into the room behind her and rested a comforting hand on her shoulder.
