“You open it.” The key was taped under the handle, exactly where my meticulous father would have left it.
Inside were three thick folders, a black leather journal, and a small carved wooden box.

Bettina put on cotton gloves and opened it: certified copies of the original deed, my grandmother’s trust documents, wire slips routing the sale money into Brock Vantell’s business account, and a forensic analysis of the forged signature.
