The Folder My Father Left
My mother had turned the roots into a down payment.
What struck me most, kneeling on that cold floor, was not the crime but the care my father had taken documenting it.
Every page was in order.
Every wire slip was matched to the account it landed in, every claim cross-referenced to the record that proved it.
He had assembled all of this quietly, over years, telling no one, carrying the whole weight of what he knew alone — because to reveal it while he lived would have meant a public war that fell hardest on the boy he had chosen to raise as his son.
So he had done the patient, invisible thing instead.
