The Four Boys at the Restaurant Sink
The doors opened before we reached the top step.
My mother was standing alone in the hall.
No staff.
No assistant.
No counsel.
She had done exactly what I asked, for the first time in my memory.
She was in dark trousers and a cream sweater instead of the structured suits she wore when she intended to own a room, and her hair was down.
I couldn’t remember ever seeing it down.
