My mother closed her eyes briefly.

“You were twenty-nine.”

“I was an adult.”

“You were not a child,” she conceded.

“Then why did you decide for me?”

“I didn’t decide for you.”

I laughed once, with nothing in it.

“You told the woman carrying my children that I was leaving the country.”
