I have thought about why those words, from that small voice, silenced a room that photographs and flight records had only stunned.
And I think it is because a child cuts to the thing adults dress up.
The grown-ups in that room had been processing the evidence like grown-ups — parsing dates, weighing the legal exposure, calculating which alliances to keep.
My son was not doing any of that.
He was standing in front of his father saying the plainest true thing in the room, the thing all the sophistication had been arranged to obscure: you hurt her, and then you laughed. There was no counterargument to it.
