I gave that answer four or five times and then a woman at the advocacy center — Priya, in fact — took me aside afterward and told me, politely, that it was actively harmful.
Because my instincts were not what did it.
My instincts, on the ninth of April, were telling me that this was probably a custody thing, that there was probably a mother somewhere coaching a kid, and that I would probably be handing two girls back to a bewildered father inside twenty minutes.
That is what I thought at 4:13 and I would have been wrong.
What actually did it was not instinct.
It was procedure, and the procedure was: do not resolve it.
