On Saturday afternoon, Nora knocked on his study door. “Mr. Mercer, may I speak with you?”

“Come in.” She stayed near the door. “There’s something I should have told you.” Graham waited. “Three months ago, Ms. Hale asked me to sign a statement.”

“What kind of statement?”

“It said you’d been behaving strangely. Forgetting things. Becoming angry without reason. I refused.”

“Why didn’t you mention this earlier?”
