Chapter 3 — At the Bedroom Door

The door to my mother’s room stood half open, and through the gap I saw something that stopped me as surely as her laughter had.

Juliet Marsh was kneeling beside my mother’s wheelchair.

She was one of the housekeepers — a quiet young woman I had hired some months earlier through an agency and had, in the manner of a man who does not truly see the people who clean his floors, barely registered since.

I would have struggled, before that afternoon, to tell you her last name.
