Afterward there were photographs on the field, and I have twenty-three of them on a hard drive, and I have looked at all twenty-three a great many times in the last year.

In nineteen of them Julian is with family.

In three he is alone.

And in one — number fourteen, taken at about 9:40 at night, in poor light, and I am the one who took it and I did not notice for eleven years — my son is standing at the edge of the field, in his gown, with his cap under his arm, and he is watching a group of about fifteen people forty feet away taking a photograph of themselves.

He is not unhappy in it.
