Julian started at Caddo Springs High School in the August of 2010.

He was fourteen.

He was small for his age until he was about seventeen and then he went up six inches in a year and ended at six foot two, which is a fact that every single person who hears this story finds significant and which made no difference to anything at all.

He was a quiet boy.

Not withdrawn — quiet.

He read constantly, he was funny at home and not at school, and he had had two friends in middle school who both went to a different high school under a zoning change in 2010, which is the thing I have never been able to stop thinking about.
