Here is what I actually want to say about it, which took me two years.

It had nothing to do with us.

He was not caught because of anything I did.

He did not go to prison for the padlock, or for the household allowance, or for a four-year-old in a car park, and there is no version of the law in this country under which he was ever going to.

A man ran my life for nineteen years and then went to prison for a thing he did to a stranger in another state eight years later, and when my brother telephoned me with the news in 2022 I sat down on the stairs and what I felt was not vindication.

It was that an eighty-eight-year-old woman in Minnesota had paid for a lesson that I had already learned for free.
