She dropped the envelope on the table.
“But someone told me to hold on,” she whispered. “Someone told me that eventually the Vances would make a mistake. And when they did, I was supposed to find you.”
Rachel frowned. “Who told you that? You’ve been under Vance surveillance for years.”
Maya looked into my eyes. “A man contacted me on an encrypted channel a year ago. He said he was a ghost tracking ghosts. He said some military families are built like fortresses, but the first key to breaching the gate is usually held by the woman they think they’ve locked inside.”
A chill shot down my spine. I knew that phrasing.
