“She was,” Adeyemi agreed. “And I will argue exigency and I have a reasonable chance. But Ms. Harper, I want you to understand what I have spent fourteen months doing.

“I have not been building a case out of what you sent me. I have been building a *parallel* case, from scratch, out of material lawfully obtained by subpoena and warrant, so that when they win the suppression motion — and there is a real chance they win it — I still have a prosecution.”

I sat with that.

“So the dossier’s useless.”

“The dossier is a roadmap. It told me where to dig. It is not, and probably never will be, evidence.” She turned a page she did not need to look at. “Of the forty-one gigabytes, I expect to be able to put approximately one percent in front of a jury.”

“I stopped them from destroying it.”
