What was done to my mother was a choice, made and remade every single day, to keep a healthy woman in a manufactured darkness for money.

Understanding that the darkness had been optional, had been reversible all along, had been a thing someone was actively choosing to maintain, was almost harder to bear than if it had been a real and hopeless disease.
