The second reaction is the one my sister had.

Caught, cornered, exposed, she did not collapse.

She recalculated.

In the space of a few seconds, I watched her mind move from shock to strategy, from oh no to how do I win this, and she reached not for an apology but for her phone, to summon reinforcements.

That is not the reaction of a person who did a wrong thing.

That is the reaction of a person for whom the wrongness was never the point, who feels no guilt at being caught, only the inconvenience of a complication to be managed.
