Chapter 14 — What I Did for a Living

I looked between the two of them, my sister and the loan shark, and I could see, plainly, what they thought they were looking at.

They thought they were looking at a woman who had just stepped off a sixteen-hour international flight with a single suitcase, jet-lagged and alone, with no allies in the country, no lawyer on retainer, no resources within reach.

They thought I was isolated, and exhausted, and helpless, and out of options.
