“What are you doing?” Valerie snapped, and for the first time all evening, her smile faltered.

“I am showing you,” I said, “why you should have checked my flight itinerary before you sent that text.

The underestimation that my sister had built her entire plan on was not new.

It was, in fact, the oldest thing between us.

All our lives, Valerie had seen me as the cautious one, the quiet one, the sister who followed rules and filled out forms and never took a risk, and she had mistaken all of that for weakness, for a person who could be pushed and would not push back.
