The House I Built With Love
The reason so much abuse goes unpunished is not that it cannot be proven in principle; it is that it happens where there are no independent witnesses, and afterward it becomes the abuser’s word against the victim’s, and the abuser is usually more powerful, more composed, more practiced at lying.
The victim knows the truth but cannot prove it, and so the truth dies in the gap between knowing and proving.
What changes that equation is a record the abuser does not control, a witness they cannot intimidate or contradict.
That is what the little camera was.
It was not a gadget.
It was the closing of the gap between what I knew and what I could prove, the transformation of my mother’s suffering from an unprovable private tragedy into a documented public crime.
Everything my sister and Julian had built depended on that gap staying open.
