The House I Built With Love
“Yes, Detective,” I said, and I closed my laptop, the record complete, its work done.
“My mother is in the basement.
She needs immediate medical attention.
She has been subjected to forced chemical sedation over a prolonged period.” The detective did not hesitate.
“Medics, downstairs, now!” she commanded into her radio, and two paramedics were already moving toward the basement door with their stretcher before she had finished the sentence.
I have thought since about how fast it all moved once the truth was finally in the room, how the months of hidden suffering ended in a matter of minutes the instant the right people could see it.
That is the terrible arithmetic of these crimes: the harm accumulates slowly, in secret, over months, and the rescue, when it finally comes, takes almost no time at all.
