My sister fared no better, and I will not pretend I felt any impulse to intervene on her behalf, because by the time of the trial I had seen, in full, everything she had done.

The court convicted Valerie of felony elder abuse, of the endangerment of a vulnerable adult, and of identity theft, and sentenced her to six years at the Washington Corrections Center for Women.

And under the terms of the criminal restitution order that followed, she was stripped of any future claim to our family’s estate, to the house, to our mother’s care, to any of it.
