The House in the Photographs
I had rehearsed an opening.
I had rehearsed four.
What actually happened is that I got to the table and she stood up, which I had not expected, and we did the thing that two women who have not seen each other in seventeen years do, which is a half-second of hesitation and then an embrace, and then both of us sat down and neither of us could speak for a bit.
And then Giselle Marchetti opened her folder and pushed a certified copy of my own marriage certificate across the table at me and said:
“Is this you.”
And I said, “Yes.”
