The House in the Photographs
Part Fourteen: The Voicemail
He called nine times over the following week and I did not answer any of them, and on the Thursday at twenty to three in the morning he left a voicemail that runs four minutes and eleven seconds.
I did not listen to it for six weeks.
Then I listened to it once and gave it to Estelle, and it has since been listened to by a number of people whose job it was, and it was played, in part, at a hearing.
I am going to describe it rather than quote it, because I have quoted it exactly twice and both times I regretted it.
The first ninety seconds are an apology, and it is the best apology I have ever received from him, and it is specific and it is articulate and at one point his voice goes.
