Sometimes people ask what happened to the man who deceived us.

My father died before his actions could be examined in court, and the investigation into the foundation produced a complicated record rather than the clean answer I once wanted.

Some people had assisted him.

Some had looked away.

Others had tried to help and been pushed aside.

Formal findings settled certain questions; others remained painful and incomplete.

I no longer measure my life by whether every person receives the consequence I imagine they deserve.

I measure it by the decisions I can make now.
