I recognized the driveway of our first house.

“How did you get that?” I asked.

“I kept duplicates of the pictures I took,” she said.

“I carried them when I moved.”

The photograph had a bend across the corner and a pale mark from water damage.

On the reverse was handwriting I recognized immediately: Claire, age eight.

Her first bicycle without training wheels.

“Tell me something that isn’t in a file,” I said.
