Chapter 13 — The Box

Inside were not medical records.

Inside were Alaric Ravenscroft’s own private ledgers — a decade of them, and unlike the ones he had brought, these were real.

They laid out, in his own hand and his own numbers, a long history of offshore embezzlement, of funds moved quietly out of the company he was sworn to steward, of illegal transfers routed through accounts no auditor had been permitted to see.

And threaded all through them, damning beyond the theft itself, were the receipts — payments, year after year, to the private facilities and the compliant physicians who had kept his daughter isolated and medicated and discredited every single time she had come too close to noticing where the money went.

That was the thing the board understood last and understood hardest: that the daughter’s “madness” and the father’s fortune were the same crime.
