Chapter 11 — The Tow Truck

The next hour was a blur of strobes and weeping and the cold machinery of the law.

I stood on the porch beside Todd Brannon and watched an officer read my mother her rights.

Doreen was cornered by another officer near the rose bushes, denying everything, throwing her mother under the bus with every breath.

Presley sat slumped on the curb, crying into her hands, ignored by everyone.

“She truly believed she was untouchable,” Brannon murmured, adjusting his glasses as they guided a handcuffed Frances toward a cruiser.
