So did other Lakota leaders, some of whom were inclined toward accommodation and were willing to negotiate terms for allowing the road.
What happened next changed everything.
During the council, even as negotiations were ongoing, a column of U.S. soldiers arrived at Fort Laramie.
They were not there to strengthen the garrison at the post.
