Fort Phil Kearny, the largest post, required consistent resupply to maintain its garrison of several hundred men and their animals.

The supplies came from Fort Laramie, roughly 170 miles to the south, via the same Bozeman Trail that the fort was supposed to be protecting.

This meant that every supply train bound for Fort Phil Kearny had to run the gauntlet of the trail — crossing rivers, moving through terrain where ambush was easy, managing dozens of wagons and hundreds of mules through country where warriors were waiting.
