The Fort Laramie Treaty Text
The actual text of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty is a document that rewards careful reading, because it makes specific commitments that are still legally operative.
Article 1 of the treaty established that the Great Sioux Reservation would be “set apart for the absolute and undisturbed use and occupation of the Indians herein named, and for such other friendly tribes or individual Indians as from time to time they may be willing, with the consent of the United States, to admit amongst them.”
Article 2 specified the boundaries of the reservation — all of the present-day South Dakota west of the Missouri River, including the Black Hills.
