The warriors assigned to attack the wood train were supposed to draw a relief force out of the fort and into the pursuit that would take them over Lodge Trail Ridge.
Captain Fetterman was given command of the relief force.
He had previously expressed contempt for the tactical abilities of the warriors his command was facing — he had reportedly said that with 80 men he could ride through the entire Sioux Nation, a statement that would acquire grim irony in retrospect.
His command of exactly 81 men on December 21 may or may not have been coincidental.
