A few relatives came because a family does, when it hears the word hospital. I only made sure that when the truth came out, it would come out where it could not be unsaid.

I have replayed that decision because I want to be sure of what it was and what it wasn’t.

It would have been easy, and satisfying, to make it a spectacle — to summon everyone we knew under false pretenses and stage a public execution, to watch my mother’s face come apart in front of the whole extended family.

Part of me wanted that with an intensity that frightened me.

But wanting to humiliate them and needing to protect myself were two different things pointed in nearly the same direction, and I had to be careful not to let the first one drive while pretending to be the second.
