I felt the pull to look back — a lifetime of being the one who couldn’t leave a family member in trouble — and I did not indulge it.

Some part of me had understood, standing in that dark supply closet, that this was never a family I was leaving.

It was a role I was finally putting down.

The pull was real, and I want to name it, because anyone who has been the reliable one in a broken family knows how strong it is.

It does not feel like generosity in the moment.

It feels like gravity.
