Three days before Julian’s company was to host its annual black-tie charity gala, I sat in the high-rise office of a family law attorney named Sarah Vance, with the Chicago skyline spread out behind her through a wall of glass.
I had brought everything: Leo’s notebook, the photograph from Claudia, the transcripts of the messages, and the accounting summaries Patricia had legally been able to provide.
Sarah Vance spent nearly two hours going through all of it, page by page, saying very little, making small precise notes on a legal pad.
