She had a good idea — the manufacturing company’s initial interest confirmed this.

She had a patent — the legal protection that the official story says is sufficient to protect an inventor’s rights.

She had done the work — decades of development and refinement, filed according to the proper procedures.

And she was turned away because of her race.

The America that claims to celebrate invention failed her specifically and repeatedly.

The America that actually practices invention, organized around social hierarchies and market power and racial hierarchy, treated her exactly as it treated most Black inventors of her era.

This is not a comfortable truth, but it is an accurate one.
