“I revised the trust documents this morning,” Margaret said. “My attorney came to the house at nine.”
“Without telling us?”
“I was under no obligation to ask permission from people waiting for me to die.”
Several guests dropped their eyes. Margaret went on. “The trust now places controlling authority with Elena after my passing, with Daniel as co-trustee. Mia’s education and future are fully funded. The annual family distributions will be reviewed according to conduct, contribution, and need.”
“Conduct?” Vanessa said, sharpening. “What does that mean?”
“It means cruelty has become expensive.”
