“There are my girls!” he called, his voice thick, his arms already open.

I came up the steps, and I placed his great-granddaughter, swaddled tight, into his big scarred hands.

And his whole face — lit up, streaming, the happiest I had seen him in years — went out like a lamp.

He was looking down at her.

First at the blue eye.

Then, slowly, at the dark one.

And the color drained from his cheeks until he was a terrible hollow white, the white of a man who has seen something he had spent decades praying he would never see again.
