The Man on Her Left
I have had a long time to think about it and I have three answers, all of them true, none of them adequate.
The first is that I did not know what to do.
There is no form.
There is no number.
I was not a lawyer and I was not an officer and I had no idea, on that plane, what a man in my position is supposed to physically do, and by the time I had worked it out — eleven months later, from a lawyer I was paying two hundred and forty dollars an hour — the worst of it had already happened.
The second is that I was not sure.
