Samantha reached in again and drew out a faded photograph.

“This was Daisy’s very first day of school,” she said.

And Daisy, our youngest, stared at it in genuine shock.

“I’ve never seen that picture,” she said, softly, to no one.

“I sent it to your mother,” I told her, from where I stood.

“The week it was taken.

I thought she would want it.

It came back to me, unopened, marked return to sender.
