The Man Who Raised Me
We were not going to ambush Laura.
We were not going to open that box on a woman who came, however falsely, in peace.
If she had walked into that wedding, played her quiet role, smiled for Gregory’s family, and left without slandering anyone, the box would have stayed sealed and gone back into the closet, and she would never have known it existed.
The truth would have remained my private burden, as it had always been.
The only thing that could unlock it was Laura herself, choosing, in front of witnesses, to tell a lie that harmed my daughters and me.
