The Man Who Raised Me
I opened my mouth to speak the standard line, the one fathers have spoken for generations.
But Samantha squeezed my arm, stopping me, and she spoke first, clearly, so that the whole room could hear her.
“The man who raised me does,” she said.
A soft murmur rippled through the seated guests.
It was a small thing, four words, and it was also the truest and most complete sentence anyone said that entire day, because it drew, in an instant, the exact and unbridgeable line between the woman who had given birth to Samantha and walked away, and the man who had stayed, and stretched groceries, and cried in kitchens, and raised her.
I had not known she was going to say it.
