The Mark That Told the Truth
It was the sound of a man deciding, in real time, to set down a weight he had carried for fifteen years, knowing it would flatten everything when it fell.
Because Fabian could have lied.
That is the thing I understood only later.
He could have said the birthmark was nothing, a coincidence, some common thing lots of people have.
He could have protected the secret for another fifteen years, and Matthias, desperate for any explanation that let him keep his father a hero, might well have taken it.
Instead, in the space of one held breath, Fabian chose the truth — chose to blow up his own long silence, to hand his half-brother the thing that would rearrange his entire understanding of his father and his childhood and his best friend, because he had watched that silence nearly destroy an innocent woman and he was not willing to buy his own comfort with my name for one more day.
