The Bågenholm case is, in some ways, more extraordinary than Jean Hilliard’s — her core temperature was lower, her cardiac arrest was longer, and the technology required to save her (cardiopulmonary bypass) was more sophisticated.

But it is also more clearly explicable in physiological terms: submersion in ice-cold water cools the core rapidly, and the protection afforded by extreme cold to the brain and other organs during prolonged cardiac arrest is well-established.
