What The Oral Tradition Says: Multiple Accounts

The oral tradition surrounding Crazy Horse’s burial is not a single unified narrative.

It includes multiple accounts from different people with different relationships to the events, preserved with different degrees of specificity and different relationships to the documentary sources that have accumulated since 1877.

Several broad patterns emerge from the various accounts:

The family moved south and east from Fort Robinson.

Multiple accounts describe movement toward what is now the Spotted Tail Agency area in Nebraska, in the direction of the Pine Ridge country.
